The Looking Glass Goes to Austin

Behind the Chair Show 2017

If you were ever wondering what a hair show is, it’s a place where stylists gather to learn about new techniques for everything hair related, as well as information about new trends, products, and tools. So, we traveled to Austin for the Behind the Chair Color, Cut and Style show in August and thought we should share with everyone things that we learned! Besides how amazing the city and food was, of course.
The show was three days long. We had educators from around the globe come to speak to us. The group of stylists that attended came from thirteen different countries. It was truly such an amazing experience that we will always remember!

Educational teams from fourteen different companies took the stage and performed different techniques for color, cut, and up-dos. A few of our favorites… MoroccanOil (of course!), Paul Mitchell, B3 Brazilian Bond Builder, and Joico. There were also other sponsors that had booths set up where they taught us about their new products and techniques. Everywhere we looked, there was inspiration and innovative ideas.

We each took so much from the show, back to the salon with us.

What we Learned in Austin:

Shauntelle’s biggest influence from the show was learning how to incorporate vivid colors into everyday colors that still need to be subtle and work appropriate but are looking for a little “oomph” to their look.

Brittany’s favorite part of the show was all of the balayage training, which offered her extra tips and tricks on how to perform a beautiful, natural sun-kissed look.

Corinne enjoyed the up-do training that showed her new ways to make a strong for up-dos. They also went into detail on new trends and romantic looks. She looks forward to using these techniques for formal events.

Shelby was in awe of the cutting techniques that were performed. They also went into detail on amazing and advanced styling. There were tons of innovative techniques that were executed and she can’t wait to incorporate them back into the salon and into her own cutting style.

We have all been in the salon, talking about the show and practicing on mannequins. The show sparked some interest and inspiration in all four of us. It reminded us all how cool our job can be, and that learning never stops. We look forward to expanding our skill sets every day, and sharing them with all of you.
